Case study · Employee recognition & engagement

From a handful of nominations to a culture of thank you

How we changed the vibe at energy company Inenco to one of good vibes and appreciation, starting by asking people what recognition actually meant to them.

The challenge

Only a third of colleagues felt engaged

Inenco had made colleague engagement a clear business priority and wanted recognition to play a much bigger part in it. Their employee survey gave the team evidence to act on, with engagement measured at 33% at the time, and they acted on it.

Rather than simply refreshing an existing employee of the month scheme, Inenco wanted to understand what recognition genuinely meant to colleagues and build something people would actually use. The existing scheme was drawing a handful of nominations each month, which gave a useful benchmark to measure against.

We were already reviewing their internal comms to get cut through on key messages, bring clarity to channels and develop a tone of voice, so recognition became part of a bigger piece of work.

The brief

Quick, easy, and available to everyone

Find a quick and easy way for colleagues to recognise each other for the work they do every day, rather than a monthly award only one person can win.

Make it modern and device flexible, so people could use it wherever they were working.

Keep the cost low and the visibility high, so great work was showcased across the business rather than disappearing into an inbox.

What we did

We asked first, then removed the barriers

01

Identified the motivation

We surveyed colleagues to understand what they thought of recognition at Inenco and what would genuinely make them feel appreciated.

02

Dug into the why

Focus groups followed. We found simple appreciation mattered more than vouchers, money or big events where only a few people benefit.

03

Brought leaders into the design

We ran Ready to Recognise sessions with all leaders including directors, working through their own views on what could or should be recognised.

04

Launched with a campaign

We implemented Fan Mail, quick to launch and easy to use, supported by a teaser campaign, how-to videos and a launch day.

05

Grew it into a platform

After a hugely successful twelve months, they upgraded to Fan Hub, our full peer to peer social recognition platform.
